Easy Knit Hat

Materials:

Knitting worsted: 1 4 oz skein

Knitting needles size 8, 9 or 10

Yarn needle

Cardboard, 3 " wide

Gauge: 5 sts = 1"

Hat: Starting at lower edge, cast on 100 sts.

Rows 1 - 4: K all sts.

Rows 5 - 8: * K 1, p 1, Repeat from * across. Repeat these 8 rows until piece is 8" long, end row 8 of pattern.

Next row: K 1, * k next 2 sts tog, repeat from * across--26 sts. Bind off. Cut yarn, leaving 24" end. Thread end in yarn needle, run through top of hat, gathering sts. Sew back seam with backstitch.

Pompom: Wind yarn 200 times around a 3" piece of cardboard. Tie windings together tightly at one end. Cut through yarn at opposite edge. Trim pompom into a round ball. Tie to top of hat with matching yarn.
